Top ten transfer stories from today


1. The shock of the summer so far. Job seeking Michael Owen signs for Man Utd to the total surprise of everyone. The striker will take take a substantial cut to his £110,000-a-week wages at Newcastle to around £30,000-a-week, although he will earn a similar figure if clauses related to goals, appearances and success are met. 2. Chelsea have confirmed they have "completely rejected" an offer from Manchester City for their club captain and England skipper John Terry, who will try their luck with anybody, it seems. (BBC)

3. Former Italy striker Christian Vieri, 35, is set to sign for Blackburn Rovers. (Gazzetta dello Sport). Not sure about this one, but there's no smoke without fire.

4. Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko is considering an offer to join Dynamo Kiev, the president of the Ukrainian champions said on Friday, where at least there he'll get a game. (Reuters)

5. Real Madrid have cheekily, put their bid for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso on hold, until mid-July when his former club Real Sociedad will no longer be entitled to a percentage of the fee.

Apparently, Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish is is serious about taking Joey Barton off Newcastle's hands – but only on an initial season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer, but the midfielder's wages of around £65,000 a week could represent a stumbling block as Newcastle would prefer a clean break. 7. Wolves have completed the signing of Sunderland's Greg Halford for an undisclosed fee.(Various)

8. Brazilian midfielder Thiago Motta has signed a four-year deal with Inter Milan after completing his drawn-out move from Genoa (Reuters)

9. Arsene Wenger is confident Emmanuel Adebayor will remain at Arsenal, but revealed he would consider Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh as a possible replacement. (French radio station RMC)

10. AC Milan could make a remarkable £12m bid for Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch if they fail to sign Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor.
