Sol Campbell in talks with Newcastle, so he can live in his big country house

Good news for Newcastle. With most of their star players headed out the exit door, Sol Campbell is in negotiations with Newcastle United about a possible move to St James' Park.

The former England centre-half, a free agent after leaving Portsmouth this summer, is engaged to Fiona Barrett – of the Barrett property empire family – and the couple have recently bought the magnificent Hallington Hall in Northumberland, and is keen to settle down as Lord of the manor at his new country spread.

With locally-born Barrett keen to settle in the north-east, they intend to make it their home, thereby dictating that Newcastle would be the ideal footballing base for 34-year-old Campbell. The defender attended Saturday's 3-0 Championship win over Reading and held talks with club officials today.

"I would love to sign for Newcastle," Campbell said. "We'll see if it's possible." Campbell is also thought to be willing to lower his salary to £15000/week to meet Newcastle's wage structure.
